On June 5, 2014 I was laying in bed on my laptop and a thought occurred to me. I wonder if Austin has an IoT meetup group. I checked and sure enough, we didn’t.
My next thought was I wonder what Silicon Valley is doing. A quick search for meetups in the Bay area revealed 13 groups that had ‘IoT’ in their name.
So I filled out the form, sent in my $19 and went to bed. I didn’t think anything of it. I thought it was going to evaporate in the light of day, like most of my other 2am brainstorms.
Over the next few days I started to notice people were signing up for this thing. I called my buddy Jeff and said, oh shit, now I have to come up with something.
That was just over 4 years ago and, at the time of the writing of this article, the Austin Internet of Things meetup is just over 2,900 members. We have enjoyed notoriety and sponsorship from big name companies like Intel, Microsoft, Dell, IBM, NXP Semiconductor, and many others.
We have become the leader in Internet of Things meetups in Austin, and are continuing to grow.
